Delaware auto insurance laws

Delaware is considered a tort state, which means that if you are a resident of the state, you're financially responsible for the damage and injury you cause in an auto accident. Delaware auto insurance laws require that all drivers carry liability coverage to meet this financial responsibility.

Delaware's liability minimums are 15/30/10. (That's $15,000 per person for injuries you cause to the other party, up to $30,000 for all, and $10,000 for damage you cause to the other party's property.)

Delaware auto insurance laws also require personal injury protection (PIP). This policy pays for injuries to you and your passengers regardless of who was at fault in the accident. You are required to carry minimum coverage of 15/30 ($15,000 per person, up to $30,000 total).

These are only minimums, however, and carrying more coverage, particularly liability, is recommended.

Delaware auto insurance companies will also offer optional coverages such as medical payments, collision, comprehensive, and uninsured and underinsured motorists coverage (an important optional policy).
