Hawaii car insurance laws

Hawaii is a no fault state, which means that, in the event of an accident, your policy will pay for your (covered) injuries regardless of who was at fault. But in return, your ability to sue the other driver involved is limited to those cases where you or a passenger sustain "serious injuries".

Hawaii auto insurance laws require drivers to carry liability and personal injury protection (PIP) policies. PIP is the no fault component of your Hawaii auto insurance policy.

The liability minimums are 20/40/10. (That's $20,000 per person for injuries you cause to the other party, up to $40,000 for all, and $10,000 for damage you cause to the other party's property.) $10,000 per person in PIP coverage is also required.

Optional PIP add-ons are also available, and include coverage for lost wages, alternative medical care, death benefits, and funeral expenses.

Hawaii drivers can also choose to lower their premiums by carrying a deductible on the PIP coverage, or by opting for PIP managed care.

Hawaii auto insurance companies will also offer optional coverages such as collision, comprehensive, and uninsured and underinsured motorists bodily injury coverage.

How Hawaii auto insurance rates are set

The price of Hawaii auto insurance is decided by the behavior of the state's drivers as a whole. Hawaii auto insurance companies take the cost of providing insurance for Hawaii drivers (this includes settlements and legal fees) and divide it up among the drivers.

But the cost isn't spread around evenly. Instead, the percentage you pay is decided by things like your driving record, your age, where you live, and the kind of car you drive.

Of course, not all insurance companies compute their figures in the same manner. This means that they will charge different rates on the same driver.

What this means for you as a driver, is that you need to shop the different rates (and they'll be very different!) for the best deal. It's the fastest easiest way to save on an Hawaii auto insurance policy. And you don't have to change a thing.
