New Hampshire auto insurance laws

New Hampshire is a tort state, which means that drivers bear financial responsibility for any damage and injury they cause in an accident.

You will be required to show proof of this responsibility should you be involved in an accident for which you are found "at fault". Most New Hampshire drivers choose to meet this responsibility by purchasing auto insurance. The policies required by New Hampshire auto insurance laws are liability, medical payments, and uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverages.

Liability insurance helps cover the cost of injury and damage caused by you to another. New Hampshire's liability minimums are 25/50/25. (That's $25,000 per person for injuries, up to $50,000 for total, and $25,000 for property damage.)

Uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage is also required in New Hampshire. These policies help pay for your expenses should you be in an accident with a driver with inadequate liability coverage. The required minimum on these policies is 25/50 ($25,000 per person injured, up to $50,000 total). You must carry the same levels of liability and un/underinsured motorist coverage.

New Hampshire auto insurance law also requires drivers to purchase at least $5,000 worth of medical expenses coverage. In the event of an accident, this policy provides for the immediate treatment of your injuries (up to the policy limits), regardless of fault.

Other optional New Hampshire auto insurance policies include collision and comprehensive.

How New Hampshire car insurance rates are set

For better or for worse, the price of New Hampshire auto insurance is decided by the behavior of the state's drivers as a whole. New Hampshire auto insurance companies take the cost of insuring New Hampshire drivers (this includes settlements and legal fees) and divide it up among the drivers.

But these costs aren't spread around evenly. Instead, the percentage you pay is decided by things like your driving record, your age, where you live, and the kind of car you drive.

Of course, not all insurance companies compute their figures in the same manner. This means that they will charge different rates on the same driver.

What this means for you as a driver, is that you need to shop the different rates (and they'll be very different!) for the best deal.

Fortunately, shopping around is easy to do online.
