North Dakota car insurance laws
North Dakota auto insurance laws require several different coverages. Every driver must purchase liability insurance, uninsured and underinsured motorists coverage, and personal injury protection (PIP).
In the event of an accident, liability insurance will provide coverage for injury and damage caused by you to the other party. North Dakota's liability minimums are 25/50/25. (That's $25,000 per person for injuries, up to $50,000 for all, and $25,000 for damage to the other party's property.)
Uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverages carry the same minimums, 25/50 ($25,000 per person injured, up to $50,000 total). However, these policies help cover the cost of your injuries should you be struck by a driver with inadequate liability coverage.
Personal injury protection (PIP) coverage of at least $30,000 per person is also required. This policy helps pay for medical expenses and loss of wages caused by an auto accident, regardless of who was at fault. (It's also called no-fault coverage.) You may choose to purchase additional PIP coverage which applies after the original $30,000 has been exhausted.
North Dakota auto insurance companies will also offer optional collision and comprehensive coverages.
How North Dakota auto insurance rates are set
For better or for worse, the price of North Dakota auto insurance is decided by the behavior of the state's drivers as a whole. North Dakota auto insurance companies take the cost of providing insurance for North Dakota drivers (this includes settlements and legal fees) and divide it up among the drivers.
But these costs aren't spread around evenly. Instead, the percentage you pay is decided by things like your driving record, your age, where you live, and the kind of car you drive.
Of course, not all auto insurance providers figure their percentages the same way. So they'll charge different rates on the same driver.
What this means for you as a driver, is that you need to shop the different rates (and they'll be very different!) for the best deal. It's the fastest easiest way to save on an North Dakota auto insurance policy.
